Curriculum Team: English

At Pinkwell Primary School we believe that it is vital we teach children to read and write to enable them to become confidence and skilled communicators. We aim to inspire and stimulate children to be well motivated and independent readers and writers.

Children are encouraged to develop a love of books and to foster a lifelong reading habit. They are introduced to a wide variety of texts, fiction and non-fiction and taught how to engage critically with them through questioning and higher order thinking, drama and real life experiences.

Books are further brought to life through enrichment activities such as author visits, trips, World Book Day celebrations and special whole school book weeks and school exhibitions.

Carefully selected high quality texts are the stimulus for writing and are linked to curriculum topics.

We encourage children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively through multi-sensory activities. Particular emphasis is placed on oracy skills and children are engaged in talking through their ideas and refining their spoken and written communication.

We aim to provide first hand experiences to inspire children and provide authentic, purposeful reasons for writing.
